Glass processing in Germany is undergoing a phase of structural adjustment in mid-2026. While new construction activity remains significantly below the previous year's level, the renovation market is driving demand for high-quality glazing. Triple glazing with U-values below 0.7 W/(m²·K) is particularly in demand, which often encounters older insulated glazing in existing buildings.
Regulatory pressure continues to increase
The Building Energy Act (GEG) is tightening requirements for thermal protection and primary energy demand. BEG funding for individual measures focuses on U-values of 0.95 W/(m²·K) and better – a value that standard double glazing can barely achieve. Processors are responding with increased use of noble gas fillings and low-E coatings. Here you can find all GEG requirements in detail.
In parallel, the topic of circular economy is gaining relevance. The EU ecodesign regulation for construction products is pending adoption and is expected to also include specifications for recyclability and material passports. Leading glass manufacturers such as Saint-Gobain and Pilkington have already launched recycling programs for old glass from renovation projects.
Market consolidation and new products
The continued slump in residential construction is leading to consolidation pressure among smaller processors. Larger system houses such as Schüco and Rehau are expanding their capacities in the area of prefabricated facade elements. Prefabrication shortens assembly times and reduces sources of error – an advantage that general contractors in building construction increasingly appreciate.
In the sun protection segment, demand is growing for integrated solar control glass with selective coatings. These reduce summer heat gain by up to 75 percent without drastically reducing daylight transmission. Sound insulation glass is also experiencing rising sales, particularly in urban areas with high traffic loads.
Digitalization in processing
Processors are increasingly relying on automated cutting and edge coating lines. Data transfer is increasingly taking place via BIM interfaces, which reduces errors in the measurement chain. Manufacturers such as Heroal now offer digital planning tools that directly network architects and processors. Guardian Glass recently launched such a platform for processors and planners.
Demand for BIM-compliant planning data is also increasing in the area of curtain wall systems. Clients are increasingly demanding IFC files and digital twins that exist throughout the entire lifecycle of the building.
Outlook for the second half of the year
Market observers expect a slight recovery in commercial new construction for the second half of 2026, while residential construction continues to stagnate. Renovation projects remain the stabilizing element. The availability of funding – particularly under the BEG – will be decisive for the order situation. Processors who invested early in digitalization and energy-efficient product lines are currently at a clear advantage.
In parallel, price developments for raw glass and noble gases remain volatile. Energy costs and logistics bottlenecks are putting pressure on margins, particularly for smaller companies without their own glass production. Further consolidation in the processor market appears likely.
