British Glass, the industry association representing the UK's glass sector, has launched a 'Recycle it right' campaign to address widespread misconceptions about proper glass disposal. The initiative responds to a critical problem: incorrectly sorted glass contaminates entire recycling streams, directly undermining the industry's sustainability objectives.
The core issue lies in the final stage of the recycling chain. Despite decades of recycling infrastructure investment, contamination at consumer level remains high. Wrongly disposed items mixed with glass—such as ceramics, window panes, or non-recyclable materials—damage processing equipment and degrade recovered material quality.
For manufacturers and processors, this translates into operational costs and reduced recycling rates that fall short of regulatory targets. Window producers and glass suppliers depend on reliable feedstock from closed-loop systems. The campaign aims to bridge the awareness gap between consumer intent and correct sorting behaviour, essential for maintaining viable recycling economics across the supply chain.
